I plan on installing some new fence on the place this spring for some cattle. Seems like everyone is going with the 20' continuous fence panels. Seems awfully expensive though. What is sucker rod going for per ft.? Does sucker rod fence hold up over time? Bull proof?....All of the fencing is going to be put up in my yard, not in a pasture. Thanks! SteigerSt320

I dont know the current prices. Recently talked to a oil company manager, he said he bought several joints of new oilfield pipe for pennies on the dollar. Said several oil companies bankrupted.

I bought several joints of used sucker rods at $7 each. That's been over 15 years ago.

Dad built a cow pen this past summer using cattle wire panels with 2 3/8 pipe evenly spaced to keep bulls from push wire panels out.

We used guard rail. Some places we went 2 rails with a cable in between. Feedlots are 3 rails high with a curb under them. Not sure on cost because my grandpa and dad both worked for hwy dept and stockpiled it over the years. Scrap price I'd guess. jicasedeere

I've looked around for some guard rail, but I haven't found a lot around. Just a few pieces here, there, and everywhere. But I have considered using guard rail as well. J & R Ranch

We have used both and in my opinion I would never use sucker rod if you gave it to me. They get bent, you need posts closer and taller, with continuous fence you can put in a 8' 3-4' deep and raise the panels above it. Continuous fence goes up a lot faster too. We bought most of ours at Baltic, SD "Box S" they aren't the cheapest but are probably the best made with round pipe, they have one more upright per 20' panel then most and the pipes slide through the upright and then are welded so they can never fall apart. Hope this helps. kzks

Sucker rod makes great fence but you need to be a good welder. put up 3/4 in sucker rod with no sag in it , keep it tight and staight and it wont bend. Does need to be welded top and bottom. Inever used the clips. Does also need pipe on top. I v
have a lot of it. Made special jigs to hang on pipe put up 2 sticks screw them together and weld. I also use continuous paneling. Also put a top pipe on it. Getting so I use continuous now cuz it goes up a lot faster. Sucker rod 7 dollars a stick Continuous paneling 85 dollars. So 35$ compared to 85$ Pipe runs the same for both kzks

make sure you buy pipe that is not lined with plactic or cement. Horizontal pipe will rust out fast.Set post in concrete but leave bottom open so moisture can get out. They can freeze and break off if they build up moisture jtpfarm

You are not too far from me.

I have thousands of feet of 3/4 inch guard rail cable I would let go cheap. I had it attached to steel posts just like sucker rod then had turnbuckles on the end. Also had some threaded through railroad ties on 10' spacing.

I had a group of 6 700lb western blacks get spooked and ram it with no damage.

Cheap and easy.

Continuous fence is better than sucker rod. This place had sucker rod when we moved here and bulls will loosen it. I also tried cattle panels with big staples on every other line. They push the staples out. Guard rails is BEST! 2 rails will work with most cattle but 3 is better. When cost is involved I prefer continuous fence. nekfarmer

Buy continuous fence pipe and weld it up yourself. Make a jig out of some angle iron, some rebar, and a clamp. Weld shops are making a killing on continuous because people are lazy. LKT

I don't know where you are in sesd but the Doon Sawmill in Doon ia sells a ton of guard rail 2 rib and 3, along with suckered rod and everything else you could need to build fence. That's where I buy all my stuff. jicasedeere

I never thought of using thick cable. That might be another good option to look into. Thanks! woodchipper

This thread over in Stock Talk addresses your question. Some people much wiser than me responded wisely.

My summary of that thread is on level land and adequate money, continuous panels are nice. Uneven ground and limited funds, sucker rod does fine if properly installed with clips rather than direct welded.
